The ADHD Entrepreneur Community
A Place For Multi-Passionate Entrepreneurs With ADHD To Level Up
A community of mission-driven entrepreneurs with ADHD who don't fit into the traditional mould of 9-to-5 corporate work.
Join The CommunityI started this ADHD entrepreneur community because it was exactly what I needed...
Shiny object syndrome, irresistible urges to check my phone, mindlessly scrolling for hours, too many ideas constantly shifting my focus and way too many tabs open were just a few of things dividing my attention...
That's where I was in 2016 when I was the Marketing Director for the launch of a fitness app called Fitplan.
Working with fitness influencers and spending far too much time on my smartphone for work, I found myself completely addicted to distraction.
While it seemed like everyone around me was addicted too, I found that the constant urge to check my phone made my ADHD so much worse...
This made it really difficult to stay focused on important work for more than 5-10 minutes, which left me feeling exhausted, burnout and nostalgic for an age when we didn't spend all day staring at screens.
Here's why everyone is addicted to their smartphone today...
While we were building the Fitplan app, I worked with a team of app developers and a user experience designer to follow what's called the Hooked Model.
Most apps are built with some variation of the Hooked Model, which is a behavioural design framework for creating habit forming apps.
The reality of capitalism today is that if people don't put an app on their home screen or use it regularly, then that app is probably going to go bankrupt and all that time, effort and venture capital dollars will be wasted.
Working on the app's development made me curious... if behavioral design is so effective at creating habitual use of apps that harvesting people's time and attention for profit, couldn't it also work for people to build the mindful habits that aim them consistently achieving their goals and launching their ideas?
Behavioral design and why flow states supercharge ADHD
That's when I went down the rabbit hole on behavioral design, why flow states accelerate the habit process and how consistently getting into flow makes it much easier for people with ADHD to be stay focused on their goals.
The thing is flow states release a lot of a dopamine to amplify focus, creativity and self-motivation... but my super distractible ADHD brain made it difficult to focus on one thing long enough to get into flow.
My environment was just too distracting with a quick hit of digital dopamine always arms reach away.
Then I read the book Atomic Habits and everything started to fall in place. To create habit that stick you need to form a clear identity-based vision of who you want to become and then create the structure, routines, environment and accountability necessary to realize that vision.
Designing the ideal ADHD lifestyle and work habits
Not having everything I needed in place, I was losing the battle for my attention because big tech algorithms knew my weaknesses and vulnerability and could use that data to continual hack my dopamine-craving ADHD brain.
While creating structure, routines and planning really helped me, I still struggled to stick with it consistently.
When I joined a mastermind group for people with ADHD, I finally found I had the accountability and emotional support from other ADHDers that I needed to stick to my goals and routines.
That's what motivated me to create the ADHD Entrepreneur Community, to share what I learned and build a supportive community of other ADHDers who understand the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship when your executive functioning is a little wonky.
You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with
This is one of my favourite quotes of all time from business author Jim Rohn.
While it's important to surround yourself with other high achievers, it's even more important for ADHDers that a few of those people also have ADHD and understand your unique challenges as an entrepreneur.
Getting business growth advice from your friends grinding away at a 9-to-5 they hate or from highly neurotypical money-hungry gurus isn't going to work very well for an entrepreneur with ADHD.
In the ADHD Entrepreneur Community you can find the support and knowledge base you need to stop ADHD from getting in the way of achieving your goals.
